This restaurant is popular with older folks for several reasons. Good food. Good service. Non-rediculous prices. But also, booths and low density crowds that allow older patrons to actually hear each other in conversation. I can personally recommend the deviled egg appetizers, the Thai salmon special (perfectly cooked), the Key Lime pie and creamed spinach. Desserts good, but limited selections.

[August 2024 update. Still one of our favorite comfort spots for great service and spot-on food. Terrific cocktails too.] How can it be that I've never left a review for J. Alexander? We love this place and have since it was Merus Grill. J.A.'s has a very relaxed, calming atmosphere with comfortable booths, some tables for larger groups and a large, elegant bar. The staff is some of the best in Houston and always make us feel so welcome. (A special shout-out to Ken, Judy and Gabriela.) We've eaten here dozens of times, and the quality and consistency of the food is really impressive. The portions are extremely generous without skimping quality. They did a very good job of freshening up the regular menu with interesting specials ranging from fish tacos to sweet BBQ Thai salmon. The fried calamari is perfect, tender and crunchy. If you order salad here, you'll feel plenty full after eating because we are talking Mount Salad here. If you like dessert, this is the place to indulge. Again, make sure you plan to share! The wine and bar selections are fabulous. And for people like me who prefer a hot drink after a meal, the Earl Gray teapot service and French press coffee can't be beat. A++++

food wise, the trout was a bit salty, but other than that, we enjoyed all the other dishes. fries are 10/10 here

wine glasses came with lipstick residue & our dishes came dirty, but our server amani quickly fixed that! the manager also took off $7 from our bill (despite having 2 glasses already poured into the dirty ones)

Thank you very much to Chloe C. for the amazing service friday night, i went out w a old friend we haven’t seen each other in years so we were talking for a long time and chloe was so patient with us thank you very much, the food was amazing good size portions for the price you pay!

Food was nice, the ribs fell right off the bone.

The Lemon Drop Mojito I ordered came out as a Lemon Drop, no mint or hint if pineapple juice as I expected. I explained that to the lady running drinks (not the server) and she said she apologized for the mixup and would get it corrected. I never saw her again all night. It's sad because for a $15 drink you expect it to be right and corrected immediately when a mistake is made.

Get there before 5:30PM if you want to have more seating options on a Saturday.

Atmosphere is nice with the dim lights and candle on each table at the booths. The place gets a lot louder than expected once more people are there. It became difficult to actually hear conversation.

Plenty of parking.

I'd consider coming back only if the food and drinks are made correctly.

The atmosphere is very nice and great for conversation with good food. Their menu reminds me of the old Houstons restaurant. Loved their baby back rib dinner where the meat is so tender it slides right off the bone. Will definitely come back.

Very nice staff were happy to help us determine what could be Gluten Free. Food was great, and the Manhattan I ordered was fantastic.
